Edema

Edema is a condition related to bad circulation, in which the feet retain excess fluid beneath the skin in the spaces within tissues. Besides extreme swelling in the legs and feet, other symptoms of edema include headaches and high blood pressure. This condition is especially common with diabetic feet.

Causes

Edema is caused by fluids inside your body accumulating in the spaces within the connective tissue holding your cells together. The spaces that the fluids fill is referred to as interstitial space. If you press down on the swollen area and it leaves an indentation where you were applying pressure for a little period time, it's called pitting edema. If it doesn't leave a lasting indentation, its called non-pitting edema. Non-pitting edema is usually the form that occurs in legs and arms. Edema is caused by the bodies retention of salt. Meaning extra salt in your body causes your body to retain extra fluid. When ample amounts of fluid are being stored, they tend to leak and fall into the interstitial spaces of your feet, arms, and legs. Be sure to make sure you know the cause of your edema. It can be related to heart disease, kidney problems, pregnancy, and sports injuries.

Treatment

If your feet are swelling, there are a few methods of relieving them aside from doctor prescribed treatments. Elevation is the key to relief. To make this as efficient as possible, run your feet under cold water in a foot bath or your tub, lay in bed and stick a few pillows under your heels while you read a book or watch T.V. Anywhere from 15-30 minutes later, you should feel the soreness and swelling starting to fade.
If your edema isn't subsiding, is assisted by weight gain and/or fevers and headaches, you need to seek medical attention.

If you're living with a bad case of edema through your daily life, you need to make sure you have a good pair of support socks and shoes that fit really well. Reduce your salt intake the best you can, as this is the leading cause of edema. You should be weary of using laxatives, and exercise often. Increase the circulation through your feet to the best of your ability.
